Purpose
The Bloodborne Pathogens class trains participants to understand the risks associated with bloodborne pathogens, implement safe practices to prevent exposure, and respond appropriately to exposure incidents. It focuses on compliance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and equips individuals to protect themselves and others in occupational settings.
Target Audience
- Healthcare Workers: Nurses, doctors, paramedics, medical assistants, and other clinical staff
- First Responders: EMTs, firefighters, police officers
- Other Professionals: Janitorial staff, tattoo artists, childcare providers, teachers, or anyone with potential occupational exposure to blood or bodily fluids
Prerequisites: No prior medical experience required; suitable for anyone with potential workplace exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
Duration
- Full Course: 1–2 hours, typically completed in a single session
- Renewal/Recertification: 1 hour (required annually per OSHA guidelines)
- Blended Learning: Online coursework (1–1.5 hours) + optional in-person review

- In-Person: Instructor-led training with presentations, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations

- Understanding Bloodborne Pathogens: Definitions, transmission methods, and workplace risk assessment
- Prevention and Safety Measures: Standard precautions, use of PPE, safe sharps handling, disinfection, and engineering controls
- Exposure Incident Response: Immediate actions, reporting procedures, medical evaluation, and documentation
- OSHA Compliance: Understanding the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, employer responsibilities, and employee rights
- Hands-On Practice (if included): PPE use, sharps disposal, cleaning protocols, and role-playing exposure scenarios
- Assessment and Certification: Knowledge quiz, optional skills evaluation, and certification valid for 1 year per OSHA requirements
